What are we talking about ?

What is global education ?

We all live on the same planet. However, as part of our daily lives, do we ever actually feel like global citizens? Global citizenship education aims to make us aware that we live in an increasingly global world. Examining this interconnected society helps us gain a better understanding of the relations between local and global realities. According to the Maastricht global education declaration (2002), used by the European Centre for Global Interdependence and Solidarity, this means 'education that opens people’s eyes and minds to the realities of the world, and awakens them to bring about a world of greater justice, equity and human rights for all'.

Also known as 'Sustainable Development and International Solidarity Education', or simply 'Global Education', this teaching methodology is based on various different values, such as equality, freedom and diversity, and explores the major global issues of our time such as access to basic rights (education, healthcare, food, water, energy, etc.), the environment, migration, climate change, and so on.

It can be used for any age range and at any level of both formal (within the education system) and non-formal (extracurricular) education. Global education projects are run in association with a wide range of organisations (NGOs, associations, local authorities, etc.) and offer an opportunity for regions of the world with very different geographical, economic, social and cultural contexts to work together.
