Interdisciplinary project articulated in:

  1. activities carried out in the classroom by teachers in the North and South of the world (one-to-one teaching, experiments, discussions, readings, elaborations, group work), by NGO workers (interventions and workshops), by other students in peer tutoring form
  2. outings/education activities in the area, in collaboration with other third parties involved in the issue
  3. exchange/sharing activities with Gourcy, in Burkina Faso
Teaching and learning objectives

- Increase the knowledge of students on the issues of the right to water and energy saving
- Raise awareness among students and families regarding the conscious use of the planet's water resources and develop in them greater awareness of the interconnections between the North and South of the World
- Increase students' ability to translate the knowledge gained in peer to peer communication forms, social communication and awareness to benefit the community (school and local)

How did the project originate? What needs does it address?

The school curriculum was developed from the multi-year decentralized cooperation project between the city of Grugliasco and the city of Gourcy, in Burkina Faso, and it enhanced it to favour the initiation of a relationship of exchange and reflection between schools of the two territories on the issue of saving water.

Summary

The project involved elementary and high schools. Depending on the school level, different, however complementary activities were carried.

PHASE 1 - Water: learning to know about it

- Water: its various uses, the water cycle, the molecule, water in the area and history
- Insights on water resources in the North and South:  indispensable right, a source of life and renewable energy source, polluted/clean water. Insights in the classroom, by teachers, NGO
- Workshops in the classroom, by teachers, experts, NGO
- Education visits to hydroelectric plants, museums, participation in thematic conferences and realization of multimedia material

Phase 2 - Water: learning to consume it

- Household questionnaire for consumption survey and data elaboration
- Water and energy: insights in the classroom and in the territory
- Water recycling, public water/private water: outings, workshops in the area; interventions in the classroom by teachers/NGO/public and private companies
- Raising awareness activities: flash mob for the international water day, realization of a photo gallery, video and communication materials

Phase 3 - North-South Relation

- Water in the world: scarcity, right denied, conflicts for its use: insights in the classroom (teachers, workshops organized by NGO) and in the territory
- International cooperation in the classroom: presentation of a project for the construction of wells in Burkina Faso, intervention of burkinabeé testimony
- Knowledge relationship with the Gourcy school in Burkina Faso: sharing of drawings, stories

What communications and dissemination strategy was used for the project ?

The project developed various forms of social communication, for the school community as a whole, for families and for the territory. Specifically:

- Realization of a Flash Mob
- Creation and implementation of a slogan/advertising posters on the correct use of water

Visibility was given to the materials on the websites of the schools involved and the City of Grugliasco

What outcomes and changes did the project generate ?

- Increased the level of interest and knowledge of students on the topics covered
- Increased the level of awareness regarding the responsibility of each individual with respect to maintaining North and South balances and the promotion of correct behaviour
- Strengthened the relationship between Grugliasco and Gourcy and gained awareness of the unfair distribution of water resources on a global scale

What difficulties did you encounter when implementing your project ?

Difficulties within the school context, in particular:

- difficulties in organizing work in coexistence between teachers and reconciling classroom activities with outings on the issues covered
- difficulties with logistics and instrumental equipment
- difficulties in tackling complex themes in a single school year
- the involvement of families, initially not envisaged

What factors made it easier to carry out your project ?

- the connection with a decentralized cooperation project between Italy and Burkina Faso, which facilitated exchange experiences between schools in the North and South
- the presence of an ONG of reference, which provided guarantee of continuity in exchange relations initiated
- the involvement of schools of different types and levels

Which factors are most related to global education ?

- the realization of an inclusive project, which supports voices and experiences of the South World
- the theme chosen - water - addressed through the integration of various knowledge and methodologies
- the ability to highlight shared responsibility with respect to the management of common assets and with respect to the planet's finite resources
- the promotion of students' leadership

How did you assess the project ?

Evaluation of all activities by the Università degli Studi di Torino. There was also:

- formal evaluation: questionnaire to students at the beginning and end of the year
- interactive evaluation: flash interviews on social communication activities conducted
- constant, ongoing monitoring
- evaluation by teachers: language papers and graphs, checks 

Any comments

This learning path is part of a broader cooperationproject between territories that directly involve the Municipality of Grugliasco. This will effectively enable the continuation of relations of exchange and collaboration between schools thanks to the solid and long-term existing partnership, and will allow developing the exchange of ideas and projects to be able to intervene in contexts where it is still difficult to access water.
